The first exhibition project of 2015 in ar/ge kunst galerie museum is entitled Spatial Dispositions and has been devised by Italian artist Aldo Giannotti (b. 1977, lives and works in Vienna). As a progressive examination of ar/ge kunst itself, Spatial Dispositions will operate as the introduction to the anniversary program. Beginning with a series of spatial observations on the planimetry and architecture of ar/ge kunst, Giannotti’s research expands into the broad field of relations that have defined and continue to shape it as an institutional space.

Presented as a ‘programmatic’ series of ideas or concept drawings, the outcome of Giannotti’s intervention is a kind of cartography that evolves in line with the research and dialogue of all the visitors, members, staff and artists who are and have been involved in making ar/ge kunst what it is today. Giannotti shifts what might be called the ‘affordances’ of the institution (properties inherent in the form or design of an environment and capable of conveying the possibility of its use) beyond immediate perception; ar/ge kunst becomes an object/subject that strives to perform a multiplicity of roles and functions in response to the actual or potential contexts it chooses to engage.

disposition: 1) a person’s inherent qualities of mind

and character; an inclination or tendency to behave

in a particular way; 2) the way in which something is

placed or arranged…

In 2015 ar/ge kunst celebrates thirty years since its foundation in 1985. To mark this anniversary the entire annual programme will serve as a critical reflection on the history of ar/ge kunst and on the Kunstverein as the institutional model that has characterized it since the beginning.

Through the various practices of the participating artists, this process of self-examination will centre on the exhibition as a mode of research, production, collaboration and restitution; a space and time conceived to facilitate reciprocity and mutual influence between the exhibitions and the accompanying program of public discussions, workshops and performances.

The first exhibition project of 2015 is entitled Spatial Dispositions and has been devised by Italian artist Aldo Giannotti (b. The history and economics of ar/ge kunst, its mission statement and ambitions, its responsibilities towards members and visitors, its relationship to its cultural and political context are here translated into projects for potential installations and performances.

Drawing, as a planning tool, has always been integral to Giannotti’s artistic practice. He uses it as an occasion or medium for liberating an imaginative, anticipatory practice that gathers up countless interventions and possible ‘exhibitions’ in one and the same space. His ideas function as a commentary, critique and contribution, perpetually reconfiguring the representation of the space. As such, Spatial Dispositions provides an approach to the institution as a system that can be read and altered according to both senses of the word disposition: as a pre-existing quality, tendency or behavioural pattern on the part of the subject, and as the possible organisation, distribution and arrangement of things in space.

In these terms, Giannotti shifts what might be called the ‘affordances’ of the institution (properties inherent in the form or design of an environment and capable of conveying the possibility of its use) beyond immediate perception; ar/ge kunst becomes an object/subject that strives to perform a multiplicity of roles and functions in response to the actual or potential contexts it chooses to engage.

Talking Image

November 17th, 2014

talking-head-aldo-giannotti.jpg

Talking Image is a performative installation that deals with the relation between theory, images, and sound, making its mediation the work itself. During the performance art critics and curators that wrote texts about exhibitions of photog-raphy are invited by the artist to re-perform their opening speeches simultaneously. The result is a cloud of sound that generates images through the association of their theoretical texts; over- lapping, canceling each other, and recreating new meanings. The recorded audio is then be played in a loop in the space for the rest of the exhibition.

This exhibition project combines artistic strategies and possibilities of movements within the field of contemporary art. On the one side the artists explore the transportation of goods as inevitable part of the exhibition practice and on the other they look critically on the borderline of structured possibilities to move within the field of political and social relations. Artists are either the initiators or they take part physically in events of movement. In some of the projects the body of the artist became the object which moves through space alone or together with objects. The idea of personal engagement and going over difficulties becomes a central part of the works.

The title of this exhibition-project suggests the invitation to a common dancing. The question which arouses is: are the artists invited to the Gallery´s dance floor or is the audience invited to dance with the Art? And: what is such a dance able to achieve?

Inspired was the title of the exhibition by the Bulgarian #ДАНСwithme- antigovernment protest – movement, which started on June 14, 2013 until now. Dance With Us origins in the acoustic overlapping of the short-phrase for “Governmental Service for National Security” – ДАНС – and the english expression for „dancing“. What caused the so called „protest movement“ was the controversal election of an even more controversal minister for National Security. From the first day on „common dancing“ was the gesture for a positive alteration of the status-quo. „The Dance“ still is going on and in its persistance origins its power and elegance and even its utopic character. This exhibition is also about corruption and nepotism. Cause: Only together we can set examples and change things.
The list of artists was based on the principle: every invited elected another one…

Questioning the relation between individuals and masses, between single deliberate acts and daily entropy, between the dual need of acting and hiding. Generate allusions on the effects of a potential disappearance, playing with the balance between the will of being present and the urge to annihilate oneself.  Is disappearance a deliberate conscious subjective choice or an externally imposed consequence? Is negating oneself considered as a form of anti-social behavior or violent act? A stronger form of presence, a memory, a political statement, are these the unspoken attempts of dropping someone out of sight?

Between Form and Movement is the title of a collective exhibition that present the work of international artists who investigate the production of space – in its social, political as well as architectural connotations – in order to explore its performative potential.
Specifically conceived or re-invented for this project, the artworks define space – be it a building or a portion of it, a monument, a fictional architectural element or an entire city – through the tensions emerging between the powers that plan it and the social relationship who inhabit it.
The body – of the performer, spectator or dweller – is understood in direct relationship with the constructed space as a cultural and political expression, through which “ideologies” carry their message.
The affordances – those formal features of an object or an environment which suggest a use, an action or more generally a movement – become, in the artist’s practice, a tool to reveal the mechanisms that govern a given space and “in-form” the behavior of those who moves in it.
At the same time, forms of appropriation and “para-functions” that emerge beyond the original plan or purpose turn into an expedient to then act on the experience of place and engender a critique of the space itself as “institution.”
Moving along the line of this negotiation, the artists research and combine the rules of spatial relationships, the economies and history of certain places, in order to pose questions about the future and destiny of architecture, of public space and of the different ideological visions that, each time, inspire its planning.

The Family  17/02/2012  19:00 – 22:00

Curated By Aldo Giannotti

This exhibition presents works that take the classical concept of the meaning of “family“ as a starting point to observe and expand its layers and implications.

Through different media and with a common conceptual approach, the artists investigate forms of relationships that are personally, genetically and culturally produced and that affect our everyday life.

The idea of  family as a social space is explored, tested and subverted by raising topics such as bounds between people, hierarchies, care or dependency.

ALDO GIANNOTTI

November 8-21, 2011
Photon Gallery, Križevniška ulica 10, Ljubljana
Opening view: Monday, November 7, 2011 at 7 pm

Curated by: Vesna Bukovec, Metka Zupanič (KOLEKTIVA)
screen-shot-2011-09-14-at-22815-pm.png

The main characteristic of Aldo Giannotti’s works is the deconstruction of iconographic images, representative and semantic clichés as well as stereotypes of various cultural environments. The artist refers to his work as “an experiment to shift paradigms”; he is interested in new and different interpretations of set patterns and established role models. This far, his oeuvre may be considered in two ways: on one hand, Giannotti generates situations and narratives that re-visit social structures, power relations, conflicts of interest, etc. In these stories, he is simultaneously the actor, director and narrator. He is a sort of a contemporary story-teller who uses improvisation, transformation and inscenation through the words, images and sounds of performative video work. One the other hand Giannotti’s art is deeply contemplative, but at the same time socially engaged and produced as a reaction to social and political events in order to clearly and publicly communicate his critical view of the world.

The installation Explosions in the Sky, exhibited at the Photon Gallery, combines two videos and an actual object — two hand grenades carved from marble. The video entitled Ciclo Continuo presents an artistic action in a public space as the artist’s revolt against the social and political situation in which the individual is driven to the point where — totally helpless — they can do nothing but “scream”. Giannotti placed a hand-cranked siren on the balcony of the Palazzo Ducale in Massa (Italy) and invited local inhabitants to vent their feelings and anger through operating the alarm. A symbol of authority and political power, the offices of the Province and Prefecture ‘fall’ in the hands of the populous who are thus able to alert their fellow citizens to the danger of authority (an allusion to the current political situation in Italy).

In the second part of the installation — the video entitled Masclet a crowd of people observe an event. Their initial enthusiasm and fascination transform to apathy due to sounds which become ever more alarming. These noises might well be the sound of explosion and war, though they are actually merely those of a public spectacle — fireworks. The situation resembles the reaction of people while watching the television news, blindly gazing at images which no longer move them to any feeling of a pain, but rather the opposite — media images have become mere images of spectacle. The crowd and their facial expressions make us ask ourselves how the individual can possibly exert any influence on the political and social system in this era of increasing apathy, which is itself symptomatic of the social disease of the modern world. War, suffering and social turmoil happen far away, and we pretend they have nothing to do with us. Through a minimal gesture the artist thus creates an effective sense of ambivalence, and simultaneously leaves to us the possibility of various interpretations of his work. Such an approach is also one of the principal features of Giannotti’s artistic endeavours. (Metka Zupanič)

performance 2011

Invited to exhibit at the Austrian Cultural Forum in London, Tomaž Kramberger and me started rehearsing Austro Pop songs. In London we performed them in various location using busking as the form of practice.
One crucial function of cultural institutions representing a nation abroad is to make its cultural heritage visible and accessible. We reckon that a strong part of the ACF’s representational focus has been the promotion of music. Austria (its historical developments as a country, respectively) has been generating vastly influential and world-renowned composers and musicians throughout centuries.
Reflecting on this point we decided to work with that legacy and extend it to the recent development in popular music.
